Melvin Gordon Fantasy Football Breakdown

Melvin has been relatively consistent when he is on the field. The Denver Broncos recently acquired him and my best guess is that they plan to use him quite often. Signing him to a two year 16 million dollar deal. The Former first-rounder amassed 4240 yards, 36Td’s, 1873 receiving yards and 11 receiving Td’s on 224 receptions in 5 seasons. Not bad when you look at the big picture but here are some issues if you consider drafting him in 2020 fantasy football. Let’s dive in.

Here are some solid reasons on why I would consider staying away from Melvin Gordon in 2020 for fantasy.

1. Only Finishing One Full Season

This is a problem for me because when I look at Rb’s or any position for that matter, I look at durability. Melvin Gordon has only finished one fantasy football season. That season goes back to 2017, where he accumulated 288.1 PPR fantasy points, 3.9 yards per carry, 8 Td’s and 1105 rushing yards. I would like to add that this was his pinnacle year in fantasy points production. He peaked at 288 points after such a great year. Looking at these stats, I wonder if he already hit his ceiling. Durability is also a concern as this was the only season he played a full 16 games in. This is something you should strongly consider if you are looking at drafting him for this year.

2. He will be a part of a committee

At the time of this written article Melvin Gordon will be joining the likes of Phillip Lindsay and Royce Freeman. This should form a three-headed monster. Or at least a monster with two spare tires. We don’t know how this committee will be splitting the volume and that is a major concern when you are looking at drafting Gordon. Lindsay had 224 attempts last year and 2 1000 yard plus rushing season. Lindsay is not impressive, to say the least, but he gets the work done to some degree. Clearly the Broncos don’t believe in either Royce or Phillip or Gordon would have never been acquired. Royce Freeman had 132 attempts and averaged 3.8 yards per carry and toted 3 touchdowns compared to Lindsay’s 7 in 2019. This Situation makes me feel uneasy all around.

3. New QB

With Drew Lock potentially under center, I question how any receptions Melvin will see as well. There is a lot of uncertainty in the chemistry these two will accumulate.

4. New Team

I really question players that have been in the NFL for a while heading over to a new team. I can make exceptions to certain players like Brady to the Buccs. I am concerned about Gordon though. He was use to the Chargers system and the rapport of him and Rivers. I think this change is going to be too much for Melvin to handle.

After careful review of the entire outlook of this new move for Melvin to Denver, I would have to conclude that this does not help his fantasy relevance.
